Sopore’s SRTC yard turns into 'Achan' | KNO

Sopore, March 16 (KNO): The State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) yard in Sopore are of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district is rapidly turning into ‘Achan’ as the garbage being collected from different places is being openly dumped there, causing foul smell. Due to improper dumping sites, authorities have turned the yard of SRTC here into a dumping site with Municipality workers collecting garbage from different places and dumps in the open yard of SRTC. The yard resembles an Achan as heaps of garbage could be seen piling here. The site has been affecting the health of many, especially authorities working in SRTC office, situated nearby to the yard, residents, students while as pedestrians also suffer due to foul smell. The municipal agencies of the city have been repeatedly demanding more land from the state administration to set up landfills and waste-to-energy plants, but to no avail. According to locals, the site has been a reason for the unhygienic unbearable odor in the surrounding and many hazardous diseases. Administration should take action for this dumping site as soon as possible to ignore further consequences, locals said. A local resident told KNO that government always showed a deaf ear towards Sopore. Many officials have so far visited the site and assured redressal of grievances of locals but nothing has been done so far.Civil Society member told KNO that Advisors to Governor also visited Sopore last month and assured redressal but al in vein. General Secretary of Civil society Sopore, Zafar Ahmad warned the higher authorities and state government of agitation, saying they will hit the streets in case their demands are not fulfilled. Municipal Executive Officer Sopore told KNO that they have raised this issue to the higher authorities and the demands of locals will be resolved soon.(KNO)
